EPCTM Teaching Award

Nomination Deadline March 15, 2019

Purpose:

This award was established by Program Committee of EPCTM to recognize 1st grade -12th grade math teachers who have demonstrated outstanding work in teaching.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for the award, an individual must:

  • Be a 1st-12th grade math teacher working in Eastern Pennsylvania.

  • Have at least one year teaching experience.

  • Not have already received this award in the past.

Evaluation Criteria:

The recipient will be chosen based on the following three areas (with alignment to NCTM Professional Standards for Teaching Mathematics: http://www.nctm.org/flipbooks/standards/professionalteaching/index.html):

  1. The Environmental Dynamic: The teacher creates an atmosphere that’s conducive for learning. They find ways to keep every student “in the game.” No assignment enables a student to give up. The teacher pursues the marginalized student (with alignment to Standard 1 and Standard 5)

  2. Constant Improvement: The teacher never stops learning and growing themselves. They find creative ways to upgrade their lesson plans and pedagogy. They are a “stream,” not a “pond” (with alignment to Standard 4 and Standard 5).

  3. Student Voice: It’s important the teacher has a clear voice in the classroom, but also that students do as well. The course experience should not be a talking head, a one-way transmission of data — the students’ needs and make up should inform the pedagogy (with alignment to Standard 2 and Standard 3).

Current Award:

Free Membership of EPCTM for 3 years and a framed certificate. The award will be announced at the spring EPCTM conference (4/13/2019). Up to six awards are issued annually to selected teachers. The nominated candidates are recommended to present at the spring conference. The recipients of the awards will be invited to present at the fall EPCTM conference.
